Pull it all together, push myself to get it done. Think about the chapter/the stump.Ħ:30 to midnight is when the words flow most freely. Get stumped? Find myself getting distracted with the internet instead of writing? Do one of the following: Do lunch/dinner, go for a walk (with dog, if dog), or shower. I tend to sit down and write for a long stretch, so I'll have tea and get up and make a fresh cup when I go to take a sip and find it cold (and let dog out if I'm dogsitting/have my dog with me).

Figuring things out, intermittent research, I feel more free to abort an idea that isn't flowing well and start anew. Refresh myself on any characters that I might have forgotten details about. Reread a few of the most recent chapters. Check email, websites, webcomics, get updated on goings-on, do some minor financial stuff/stuff with my community. Take the time to eat (brain food!), make tea. These are the points that are most likely to slow me down and make the chapter less smooth. Having a beginning and ending in mind make the upcoming chapter flow more smoothly. Key points to hit - do my ideas move the story/characterization forward? If I can screw my protagonist and write myself into a corner, that's great. Is fine if I don't have the answer to a crisis. Throughout day, block out upcoming chapter(s) in my head.

Editing process is slower than I'd like to admit.Īttend to chores, financial stuff, community stuff, typo fixes, correspondence, and take some time to unwind. I may rewrite one chapter a few times until I have it 'figured out'. Wake up, first thought is 'am I writing?' No? What do I need to do today, then?įrom 10-12 or 10-1, at the very minimum, sit down with laptop, reread chapters of my first work (currently writing third, editing first), read reader comments, make notes, edit and/or rewrite segments. So I write on Monday, Friday, and pretty much every other Wednesday. If enough funding comes in from readers, I write a third. I write an online serial, so my writing process is pretty rigidly defined by the schedule I set for myself.
